THE PINK PAPER Issue #1: I’m Just A Girl

THE PINK PAPER is a zine that offers a witty and ironic take on feminism in modern society, blending humor with insightful commentary on issues like gender equality, intersectionality, and body positivity. Issue #1 features playful, tongue-in-cheek content, combining quirky Sonny Angels alongside articles that challenge stereotypes and spark conversation. With a mix of satire and serious discussion, the zine invites readers to engage with feminist ideas in a fun and approachable way.

THE PINK PAPER Front Cover. The issue titled “I’m Just A Girl” is based on a social media trend that allows people to express vulnerability, simplicity, or the feeling of being misunderstood. The phrase "I'm just a girl" is often used ironically or playfully to downplay someone's complexities or emotions, presenting themselves as being "just" a girl in a world that often underestimates or stereotypes women.

Sonny Angels Were Made for Women. What are Sonny Angels and why were they created? Why do people partake in collecting behavior? Why are women obsessing over a 3-inch tall fictitious 2-year-old cherub figurine?

“This zine is a response to social stresses placed upon women and a safe space for us to feel seen or heard. Using sonny angels, a toy made specifically to comfort people, as a humorous and unserious response or reaction towards social issues or current trends might bring you some joy and laughter, and make you feel like you’re a part of something larger.”

The Barbie Movie & Womanhood. The 2023 Barbie movie, written by Greta Gerwig, features a powerful monologue between Margot Robbie's Barbie and Gloria, addressing the suffocating and exhausting pressures of living up to society’s standards of being a woman. However, this message is somewhat overshadowed by the satire song "I'm Just Ken," which focuses on masculinity that ended up outshining "What I Was Made For," a poignant song by a female artist exploring the feeling of being reduced to a product.

My Sonny Angel Inventory. Since 2005, Dream has released more than 1,300 different unique characters. The odds of getting a regular Sonny Angel in each series are 1 in 12, but the chance of finding the secret figure is 1 in 144.

Spreads: Are You A Girl’s Girl?, Rejecting then Embracing Hyper-Femininity, Girl Maths & Girl Trends.

Special Thanks and Colophon. Each zine includes a 2D box that contains a random Sonny Angel sticker, inviting readers to engage in gacha culture and experience the thrill of collecting their own Sonny Angel.
