A book that features the works of Chinese contemporary artists: Chi Peng, Li Wei, Liu Bolin, Ou Zhihang, Ren Hang, and Zhang Huan. These artists use photography to document live performancse or to create a finished art object that incorporates the performative use of the body. They position themselves, through their work, against accepted social norms of behavior within their culture in order to release themselves from the cultural mainstream, and to renegotiate their individual position within a changing social climate.
A website was created as an extension of the book. Despite achieving a consistent visual concept, the site also introduces interactive elements to allow the user to experience Chinese contemporary art on a different medium. Both the book and website maintain a cohesive branding through consistent color systems and typography. Bold texts often overlap with images to create tension that is reflective of the anxiety felt by Chinese artists during the 20th century post-Communism period.
